Special Issue: Affective Agents

Call for Papers

Over the past few years, human-computer interaction has become a hot research topic in both academy and industry. The exponential advances in intelligent devices allow a growing development of new kinds of interactions, beyond the simple manipulation of (virtual or physical) objects. Agent technology is playing a key role for improving interactions: user interface personalization, profiling techniques, Markovian models for predicting user actions, detection of user emotions and movements, etc.

Affective agents are a kind of intelligent agents that are able to detect and respond appropriately to the user’s emotions. Concretely, instead of predicting behavior according to given patterns of interaction, they also take the key role of emotions into account in the human-computer interaction process. Embodiments of these agents go from simple interfaces to animated avatars, toys, and robots. Affective agents therefore open new challenges for making computer-based devices more human-like and human-friendly.

Research about affective agents goes beyond simply detecting the human user’s emotions: actually reasoning about the detected emotions and adapting behavior subsequently is even more challenging. These issues have generated a new open field, which, undoubtedly, will change the way in which interactions will be conceived in the very near future.

In this special issue, we aim to provide an up-to-date overview of this booming research field, in order to increase knowledge and understanding of the many aspects and applications of affective agents. We seek high quality research articles showing theoretical or practical innovations, as well as deep analysis and benchmarking of existing approaches.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

Affective agent architectures
Psychological aspects of emotions for affective agents
Reasoning about emotions in affective agents
Affective agent applications
Affective agents in a social network context
Affective agents in the e-learning process
Affective robots
Affective toys
Affective agent simulation
Benchmarks of existing approaches
